Given it’s proximity to and popularity among Australian travelers, it’s no surprise that Bali is a mecca for foodies, especially those that are vegetarian, plant based or those who simply enjoy good quality, healthy organic dishes. The island truly boasts something for everyone. Five star fine dining establishments sit side by side with market stalls selling freshly cooked Indonesia staples and a new breed of organic, vegan and vegetarian restaurants co-exist with smokey burger and rib joints.
No two days in Bali are ever the same. You can start your day with a restorative wheat grass shot and granola, enjoy an Indo-fusion lunch that draws deeply on the islands rich cultural heritage and end your evening with a fist full of tacos.
New dining options seem to pop up every time we visit, and more and more are opening outside of busy Seminyak. We’ve gathered together a list of some of our current favorites and will continue to add places we have enjoyed as we continue to explore.
Given that we currently live in Singapore, we are able to visit Bali on a semi-regular basis. Pretty much every restaurant caters to a wide range of diets and a high proportion of food in bowls. I swear there is a Bali Bowl on every cafe menu. We are still mourning the loss of our favourite Petitneget Cafe but here are some of the current standouts for us:
- Ulekan, in Canngu – Ulekan is part of the Good Food Brotherhood which also includes one of our other favourites, Watercress. The beautiful interiors and food at Ulekan, offers a fresh take on Indonesian food with many vegetarian options.
- Bikini, in Seminyak – Inventive flavours and beautiful presentation of food. Sadly we have no photos as it was too dark to properly capture. Sister restaurant to the popular Sisterfields, which is located next door.
- Sardine, in Seminyak – A more upscale Indonesian dining experience overlooking a mini rice field.
- Nook, in Seminyak – A ramshackle but curated open air cafe with all of the character.
- Coffee Cartel, in Seminyak – One of the best breakfast locations. Try their Vegan Smak Hotcakes or their Banana bread with vanilla coco ricotta cream.
- Watercress, in Seminyak – Another cafe from the Good Food Brotherhood. There are several locations, but we go to the one in Seminyak. Our favourite lunch option is the deli filled with salad options.
- Motel Mexicola, in Seminyak – More for the people watching and the insta fabulous interiors, but their margaritas are great as well as the Vegetarian (and GF) empanadas. For the best jackfruit tacos, try Lacalaca in both Seminyak and Canggu
- Kynd Community, in Seminyak – they have a dairy free ice cream shop at the entrance. Its out of this world.
- Crate Cafe, in Canggu – for smoothie bowls, breakfast boals and bowls of salad. Hipster vibe where you BYOS – bring your own scooter.
